WHO WAS BILLY LEE?

GEORGE WASHINGTON’S MULATTO MAN

.

Sunday, April 24th 2 p.m., Veramar Vineyards 905 Quarry Rd, Berryville, VA   billy lee

.

Come join us at beautiful Veramar Vineyard for some wine and history as we kick off our first program of 2016!  Billy Lee was been described as “the most famous slave of the Revolutionary era.” Until now, however, no one has attempted to discover who he was or why George Washington formed a lifetime bond with him. Drawing from the extensive research he performed in writing his newest book, George Washington’s Mulatto Man – Who was Billy Lee?” (published by Commonwealth Books of Virginia on 15 November 2015), author James Thompson will share his astonishing answers to these questions.

.

Thompson explains that Washington’s commitment to his mulatto man was based on three unbreakable forces: a pledge he made to the boy’s uncle, being his half-brother Lawrence Washington; a private he made vow to the boy’s mother, being his childhood sweetheart Sally Cary Fairfax; and the affection he developed for his fearless huntsman and loyal wartime attendant.
