Charles Hall, the historian for Fort Edwards provides a great view of what we miss from our cars driving through

Captain Mercer’s Company of the Virginia Regiment

coming to camp out,

and to discuss location

of the  Battle of the Great Cacapon,

October 28, 2017 Saturday.

A FEW STORIES

REGARDING FORT EDWARDS

Below this section are the calendar of events and past event.

.

But, in the meantime, here’s a few stories

of the ghosts who haunt this place,

and who continue to haunt our imaginations.

.

Typical of Killbuck’s modus operandi. Lure the Whites out of the fort.  He used to live with the Whites. He knew them. They’ll come out.  Then Killbuck and friend run off. Make the Whites chase you. Set the trap way in advance. Lead them to the Ambush. Killbuck used this approach many times before and after.

.

The additional benefit of this approach is other troops will come out of the fort as reinforcements – because they can hear the battle from the fort.

.

In this particular battle, though, The reinforcing troops afraid of friendly fire, retreated.  But, there were brave men WHO did come out and who had to do so. This was their duty.  The Indians thought it folly but they still marveled at it.

.

And one more thing, dear reader !!

Will you find the spot near the fort where all this happened?

It’s a beautiful area.  Good for an afternoon.

.

But before you go.

Click on the House. That’s Fort Edwards in Capon Bridge WV.

The three Skull & Cross Bones are

the suggested sites of the Battle of the Great Cacapon.

Perhaps some local historians in the area can tell us the spot.

.

.

Read this summary.

Battle of the Great Cacapon – Wikipedia overview.

.

During that battle, an unknown wagoner under Captain “Jack” John Ashby’s command and who made all his glory in the War for Independence but who got all his wounds in this war, lay convalescing from a shot by an Indian chasing him on horse back. The Indian shot him through the neck and out his mouth. Daniel Morgan made it to safety back to Fort Edwards and while convalescing, probably heard the sounds of this battle.  Read about Daniel Morgan.

.

Then the trials.

They were held in Winchester,

the headquarters for Colonel Washington.

.

The Court Martials after the Battle of the Great Cacapon, cowardice and bravery just outside Fort Edwards. The sounds of the battle could be heard by the fort.

.

.

.

There’s story after story of troops constantly coming through back and forth by Fort Edwards.

.

Netawatwees a chief of Delaware Indians

Netawatwees’ son was Bemino (John Killbuck Sr.), a renowned war leader on the French side during the French and Indian War. His grandson was Gelelemend (1737-1811), or John Killbuck Jr., a Delaware chief during the American Revolutionary War.
