DOUBLE YEAR ?

Look at this date – Fryday the 11th. of March 1747/8. Confusing?

.

That’s because the start of the year was March 25.  So 1748 begins March 25. Any date before is 1747.  Because other nations  switched to January 1 before England did, often recorded dates would show (OS) old style year and (NS) new style year.

.

Finally the official beginning of the year was changed  to January 1 in  1752.
